In the News: Instagram Set to Roll Out “Recommendations Reset” Feature

December 20, 2024

Tired of your Instagram feed not feeling right? Instagram is rolling out a new feature that lets you reset your content suggestions. Set to launch globally soon, this update will give young people more control over what they see—whether it’s cutting back on certain content, discovering new interests, or starting fresh with a clean slate. Check out what the #GoodforMEdia team thinks about this exciting new feature!

What you need to know:

  • Instagram is giving users the ability to refresh their algorithm by clearing recommended content across Explore, Reels, and their Feed.

Our gut reactions:

  • Really good option to have; don’t see many negatives to it.

  • Some content we see is reflective of the headspace we were in at a specific time. Then it will keep suggesting things we no longer want to see or maybe shouldn’t have seen in the first place.

  • Excited about the new feature; has potential to give youth more control over what they see.

  • Nice to have a clean state and not something reflective of what you were interested in a few years ago.

  • For example, some of us would like to move on from election content we are still seeing.

  • Similar to a feature available on TikTok.

We think it’s headed in the…

  • Right direction

  • Wrong direction

  • Too soon to tell

What to look out for:

  • While you are resetting, use this opportunity to do more “not interested” taps since it’s less likely you’ll do that while scrolling.

  • Would be nice to have the option to have no algorithm control your feed.

  • Will it also delete your data?

  • How will they promote this to the audience? How will teens know these are options?

We want to hear from you!

What do you think of this new feature? Do you feel it will help youth have more control over the content they see?
