“Thief,” a poem exploring a young person’s relationship with social media

By Reese | February 10, 2025

“Like a predator hunting his prey, the crafty thief crept inside.
He grabbed a hold of the important things and watched as they died.
Seconds, minutes, and hours were all lost in time
His suffocating chokehold was an unimaginable crime.
You thought his strong grip would help you connect
But the tighter he held you down, the stronger the disconnect.
Day after day, this cruel culprit sucked the joy out of life
He led you to hundreds of posts that cut you like a knife.
He convinced you more apps would elevate you into the “it” crowd
The silence of not speaking to people grew increasingly loud
Fond memories were blurred with each click, scroll, and post.
Human connection was what you needed and missed most.
This lonely lifestyle would continue to grow weary and old
Only strength and wisdom could break free from the thief’s unforgiving hold.”
